Ever wondered about the evolution of the Jacuzzi® hot tub? Whether you already own one or you’re considering adding one to your backyard, there might be a few things you didn’t know about one of the world’s most recognized and largest selling brand of jetted whirlpool baths, hot tubs, and spas. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Jacuzzi® hot tub history!

The 1900s

Back in the early 1900s, seven Jacuzzi® brothers made the trip from Italy to the United States of America. Settling in California, they made waves in the aviation industry with the invention of the first enclosed-cabin monoplane. In 1925, they turned their sights to water systems and pumps for the Californian orange groves and created the agricultural industry’s first submersible pump.

The 1950s

Fast forward to 1956, when the Jacuzzi® brothers set their invention wheels in motion to help a family member who was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis. They came up with a novel idea: a portable pain-relieving hydrotherapy pump, now known as the J-300. They sold the J-300 to hospitals and schools and created a successful niche market in the process.

The 1960s

In 1968, third generation family member Roy Jacuzzi invents the first self-contained whirlpool bath and names it the “Roman” in celebration of the ancient societies bathhouses.  It has 50/50 air-to-water ratio jets and fully-integrated plumbing.

The 1970s

After the success of the whirlpool bath, Roy Jacuzzi incorporates heating and filtration systems to keep the water warm and clean. This spawns the world’s first hot tub, which unlike the whirlpool bath, can be used outside as an invigorating spa treatment.

The 1980s

As the spa movement begins to take shape in the 80s, Jacuzzi® introduces new models that work as hot tubs, whirlpool baths and both. The multipurpose spas now include soothing waterfalls to take entertainment and relaxation to new heights.

The 1990s

By the 90s, Roy Jacuzzi is recognized for his numerous contributions in the innovation of hydrotherapy for home use and is inducted into the National Kitchen and Bath Hall of Fame. Jacuzzi® hot tubs are now a staple part of family life and backyard entertainment alongside the humble BBQ.

The 2000s

Today the award-winning Jacuzzi® hot tub is synonymous with spa products across the globe regardless of the manufacturer. With more than 250 worldwide patents for advancements in pump systems, jet technology, air controls and product designs, the sky’s the limit.
