Step 1: Consider Pool Accessories and Upgrades
Whether you’re new to opening a pool or not, you’ll need to first consider any pool accessories you have. Having the necessary equipment when opening your pool will make the process easier. If you’ve had the same old pool skimmer for five years, it might be falling apart. Getting up-to-date equipment means you’ll be able to clean your pool better. Also, check to make sure you have all the necessary testing equipment and chemicals.
For the basics, you’ll need a way to test and adjust pH, chlorine, and total alkalinity. If you have an above-ground pool, you may need special cleaning equipment depending on the material of your pool.
Step 2: Examine Your Pool

Step 4: Test and Add Chemicals
Now that your water is clean, you’ll need to adjust the chemical levels and ensure that it is balanced and safe to use. Taking the time to adjust your pH, chlorine, and alkalinity will help you maintain clean water throughout the season and create a safe environment.
The easiest way you can test these levels is with a test kit. It’s possible to pair a test kit with a chemical kit to streamline the process. Your pool’s pH should be around 7.3. Chlorine levels should fall between 1 and 3 parts per million. Your total alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 parts per million.
Step 5: Spruce Up Your Backyard
Your swimming pool experience is about so much more than just the pool. It’s about the oasis that you have created in your backyard living space. After the snow has cleared, you may need to spend some time bringing the other aspects of your backyard back to life as well.
- Use soapy water, a hose and a rag to wash furniture
- Use a hose and/or pressure washer to clean your deck, patio and siding of the house
- Collect any debris from your backyard, such as garbage, rocks or sticks
- Repair any damaged areas or things that could be replaced
- Make a plan for the grass, gardens and landscape in your yard
- Add lighting, BBQ and various accessories/essentials
