There’s no doubt that hot tubs are the best way to beat stress. However, like all good things in life, they do still require regular maintenance and upkeep.

Cloudy hot tub water, in particular, can take all the fun away from your tub.

Read on to find out why this happens and what you can do to prevent this from happening.

What Causes Cloudy Hot Tub Water, Anyway?

When it comes to keeping your spa water crystal clear, maintenance is everything. The average spa has a temperature between 98 degrees and 102 degrees Fahrenheit, on average.

Unfortunately, while that makes it super comfortable for you, it also makes it the perfect breeding ground for algae and other organisms you don’t want in your water.

What’s more, the dirt and oil that we humans naturally produce can also contribute to this problem. It’s never safe to use the spa when the water is cloudy, as this can lead to rashes and severe illnesses, in extreme cases.

What Can You Do About It?

Unfortunately, there’s no single reason behind cloudy water. Anything and everything from the sanitizer to the pH levels could be causing this issue. One of the first things you should do is check your filter. A misaligned or dirty filter is often the most obvious culprit. If cleaning them doesn’t resolve the issue, you may have to get them replaced.

It’s also a good idea to check the chemistry of the water. Getting the right level is of pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness is of utmost importance. For example, water that is too alkaline can also cause cloudiness.

How Can You Prevent Cloudy Water?

If you’ve had more guests than usual, it’s likely that the excess dirt overwhelmed your filtration system and led to build-up. Once you’ve identified the issue, you should immediately clear the tub and clean the interior surface as well.

Fortunately, it’s not at all difficult to prevent water from getting cloudy. Regular maintenance and upkeep can prevent most of the common problems that can occur with hot tubs. If you’re someone who often procrastinates when it comes to cleaning and maintenance, creating your own maintenance schedule can come in really handy for this purpose.

You should also consider sticking to using only filtered water with your spa. It would be prudent to invest in a hose filter if you don’t own one already, as well. It’s also necessary to routinely examine and clean the filters using the appropriate level of sanitizer.

You can use spa shock at least once a week to prevent the buildup of algae and other contaminants in your spa, but the type of shock you use depends on the sanitizer you’re using. Finally, you should replace the water at least every three months and keep your pool covered.
